Every collection starts the same way.
A tray of loose stones.
A quiet morning (or evening) - iced latte in-hand.
And a worktable slowly filling with beads, tools, leather, and little design ideas taking shape.
For our Aquamarine Edit, the process began exactly like that.
A handful of soft blue stones sitting in a small bowl on my workstation — catching the light just enough to remind me of the ocean.
March’s birthstone has always been one of my favorites. There’s something about aquamarine that feels calm and effortless. Not flashy, not overpowering — just quietly beautiful.
And when I design a birthstone collection, I try to approach it a little differently than a traditional jewelry line.
Whenever possible, I like to source gemstones locally. Some of the stones used in this edit came from The Indian Store in Vista, California — a small shop I love supporting.
Not only does that allow us to work with stones in smaller, more unique batches, but it also means we get to support other small businesses right here in our community.
As a small business owner myself, that matters to me.
Shopping small, sourcing small, creating small batches — it all feels like part of the same ecosystem.
And it also means many of our birthstone pieces end up being limited editions, because once those stones are gone, they’re gone.
A quiet moment at my home workbench — where each Aquamarine piece began.
How These Pieces Come Together
Jewelry rarely begins as a finished design in my head.
It’s much more tactile than that.
I start by laying out the stones and materials on my workstation — moving things around, pairing textures, testing color combinations.
Aquamarine is one of those stones that almost guides the design itself.
Its soft blue tone pairs beautifully with:
- silver metals
- mixed metal accents
- natural leather
- other soft gemstones
Once the palette feels right, the real process begins.
Each piece is assembled and finished by hand in our California studio, bead by bead, strand by strand.
Sometimes a design works immediately.
Other times I’ll rework a piece three or four times until it feels just right.
That’s part of the beauty of making jewelry this way — it stays organic, creative, and a little bit imperfect in the best way.
And by the time a finished piece leaves the studio, it has passed through a lot of hands and small decisions that never really show up in the final product photo.
But they’re there.
What Is Aquamarine?
Aquamarine belongs to the beryl family of gemstones, the same mineral group that produces emeralds.
Its name comes from the Latin words:
Aqua – water
Marina – sea
Meaning quite literally:
“Water of the sea.”
When you look at aquamarine stones in natural light, the name makes perfect sense.
They range from pale sky blue to deeper ocean tones, often with a gentle translucence that catches the light beautifully.
Unlike darker gemstones that feel dramatic or formal, aquamarine tends to feel light, calm, and incredibly wearable.
Which is exactly why we love designing with it.

The Meaning Behind Aquamarine
Aquamarine has been admired for centuries — not only for its beauty, but also for the symbolism people have attached to it over time.
Historically, sailors carried aquamarine stones on long voyages, believing they would protect them at sea and ensure safe travel.
Today, the stone is often associated with:
• calm and clarity
• emotional balance
• clear communication
• courage and confidence
Many people also connect aquamarine to the throat chakra, which represents self-expression and truth.
Whether you’re drawn to the symbolism or simply love the color, aquamarine carries a feeling of quiet strength and serenity.
And honestly — we could all use a little more of that.
Why Aquamarine Layers So Beautifully
One of the reasons aquamarine fits so naturally into the Lizzy James collection is how beautifully it layers with other pieces.
The soft blue tones complement:
- silver jewelry
- gold jewelry
- mixed metal stacks
- neutral gemstones
- leather wrap bracelets
Instead of dominating an outfit, aquamarine tends to enhance everything around it.
It’s subtle, but never boring.
Which makes it perfect for the kind of jewelry we love to create — pieces that layer effortlessly and move with you through your day.

The Aquamarine Edit
This season’s Aquamarine Edit features a small collection of handcrafted pieces designed to mix seamlessly into your everyday jewelry stack.
Because many of the stones were sourced in small batches, several of these designs are limited edition pieces.
Once the stones from this batch are gone, we may not see them again in exactly the same way.
Which makes each finished piece feel a little more special.
The Pieces Our Customers Love Most
Of all the pieces in this edit, the one our customers are reaching for most is the Aquamarine Tide Bracelet. Three delicate strands of natural faceted aquamarine beads — ranging from soft, icy blues to deeper ocean tones — create a beautiful sense of movement and dimension on the wrist. The tiny 2–3mm gemstones catch the light in a subtle way, giving the bracelet an airy, lightweight feel while still feeling grounded and elegant. It’s the kind of piece that layers effortlessly with everyday favorites, which may be exactly why it has quickly become the most-loved piece in the collection.
We’ve been wrapping this one up and sending it out of the studio almost daily.

From the Studio to You
Every piece in the Aquamarine Edit begins the same way — with loose stones on a worktable and an idea slowly taking shape.
From sourcing small batches of gemstones to assembling each piece by hand in our studio, this collection reflects the way we’ve always approached jewelry making.
Slowly. Thoughtfully. And with a lot of heart behind every detail.
If aquamarine’s soft ocean blues speak to you the way they did to us, we hope these pieces find a place in your everyday layers.
From our hands to yours.
